Lewis Hamilton ‚unlucky‘ in Italian GP pole position near-miss
Lewis Hamilton believes that he had been“really unlucky“ not to pip Charles Leclerc to Italian GP pole – but states he is enjoying the“exciting“ duel using Ferrari in Monza.
With the last laps of Q3 ruined by the farcical struggle for a tow round F1’s fastest lap, the struggle for pole was finally settled from the very first Q3 runs – which Leclerc gained from Mercedes‘ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas from 0.047s.
But both Hamilton and Bottas reckon pole might have been theirs had they not had to lift if KimI Raikkonen crashed before them at the Parabolica. When it snapped off, hamilton was directly behind the Alfa Romeo.
„I had been very unlucky,“ Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. „I was behind Kimi for the first lap. I probably began so I caught him, the lap somewhat too near. Obviously with a car you need to generate a slightly larger gap for the tow.

„I began catching him through the corners and I was thinking’don’t catch him too far‘ and I got to the final corner and he summoned, so I needed to lift. With that elevator I would have readily lost half a tenth plus it might have bene the gap between instant and rod.
Nonetheless, the championship leader stated:“But that’s leaving. I really like that it is that close and it is not several tenths.“
Leclerc vs Hamilton in comparison
In side-by-side SkyPad analysis of Leclerc and Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson shows how the Mercedes was fractionally ahead of Ferrari beginning the backstraight that leads into the Parabolica – and then was still level pegging exiting the final turn despite necessarily having to ease away for Raikkonen.
From the movie above, Sky F1’s Davidson says:“Raikkonen spins out in front and Lewis surely must back out of that ever so marginally.
„On the exit, despite a vehicle spinning in front of him and clearly needing to flip out, the extra speed the Mercedes essentially has beneath it when it goes through a high-profile corner is sufficient to maintain him pretty substantially level pegging with the Ferrari.
„Unfortunately for himonto that [pit] straight, only at the end that’s what made the difference.“
Leclerc stated he had not been pleased with his own Q3 effort.
„Mercedes were quick, we were very quick too,“ the Ferrari driver said.
„My lap wasn’t special. I was far too near Hulkenberg on the very first lap. The slipstream was clearly excellent, but in the corners I had been losing a lot. It was not perfect, but I was too close.“
Hamilton and Bottas begin between the two Ferraris on Sunday’s grid along with the Englishman said:“I am very happy we improved the auto piece by bit during the weekend and also managed to get quite near the Ferraris which is great.“
