Lewis Hamilton ‚unlucky‘ in Italian GP pole position near-miss

Lewis Hamilton believes that he had been“really unlucky“ to not pip Charles Leclerc to GP post – but says he’s enjoying the“exciting“ duel with Ferrari at Monza.
With the final laps of Q3 ruined by the farcical struggle to get a tow around F1’s fastest lap, the battle for pole was finally settled by the very first Q3 runs – that Leclerc won from Mercedes‘ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas from 0.047s.
But Bottas and also Hamilton suspect rod could have been theirs had they not had to lift if KimI Raikkonen crashed at the Parabolica ahead of them. Hamilton was straight supporting the Alfa Romeo when it snapped off.
„I had been really unlucky,“ Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. „I was behind Kimi for my first lap. I probably began so that I caught him, the lap somewhat too near. Clearly with a slower car you have to generate a gap for your tow.

„I began catching him through the corners and I was thinking’do not catch him too far‘ and I got to the final corner and he summoned, and so I had to lift. With that lift I’d have lost per week and it would have bene the gap between moment and rod.
Nonetheless, the championship leader explained:“But that’s leaving. I love that it’s that close and it’s not multiple tenths.“
Leclerc vs Hamilton compared
In side-by-side SkyPad analysis of Leclerc and also Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson shows how the Mercedes had been fractionally ahead of Ferrari beginning the backstraight which leads into the Parabolica – then was still level pegging leaving the final turn despite necessarily having to ease off for Raikkonen.
In the video over, Sky F1’s Davidson says:“Raikkonen spins out ahead and Lewis surely has to back out of this ever so marginally.
„On the departure, even though a car spinning in front of him and clearly needing to back out, the additional speed the Mercedes essentially has beneath it as it goes via a high-speed corner is sufficient to keep him pretty substantially level pegging with the Ferrari.
„Unfortunately for himonto this [pit] straight, only at the end that is what made the difference“
Meanwhile, Leclerc stated he had not been pleased.
„Mercedes were fast, we were very fast too,“ that the Ferrari driver said.
„My lap was not special. I was way too close to Hulkenberg. The slipstream was clearly amazing, but at the corners I lost a lot. It was not ideal, I was too close.“
Hamilton and Bottas begin between both Ferraris on Sunday’s grid and the Englishman said:“I am very happy we enhanced the auto by bit during the weekend and then also was able to get quite close to the Ferraris that is great.“
