Lewis Hamilton ‚unlucky‘ in Italian GP pole position near-miss
Lewis Hamilton thinks he had been“very unlucky“ not to pip Charles Leclerc to Italian GP pole – but states he’s enjoying the“exciting“ duel with Ferrari in Monza.
With the last laps of Q3 ruined by the farcical struggle for a tow round F1’s quickest lap, the battle for rod was ultimately settled by the very first Q3 runs – which Leclerc won from Mercedes‘ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas by 0.047s.
But Bottas and also Hamilton suppose rod might have been theirs had they not had to lift if KimI Raikkonen crashed before them in the Parabolica. As it spun off hamilton was right supporting the Alfa Romeo.
„I had been really unfortunate,“ Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. „I was only behind Kimi for the very first lap. I probably started the lap somewhat too near so that I was catching him. With a marginally slower car you have to produce a gap for the tow.

„I began catching him through the corners and I was thinking’don’t grab him too much‘ and I got to the last corner and he spun, so I needed to lift. With that elevator I would have readily lost half a tenth plus it could have bene the gap between rod and second.
Nevertheless, the championship leader said:“But that’s leaving. I really like that it’s that close and it’s not multiple tenths.“
Leclerc vs Hamilton in comparison
In side-by-side SkyPad evaluation of Leclerc and Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson reveals how the Mercedes had been fractionally ahead of Ferrari starting the backstraight which leads into the Parabolica – then was still level pegging leaving the last turn despite necessarily having to ease away for Raikkonen.
From the video above, Sky F1’s Davidson says:“Raikkonen spins out in front and Lewis certainly has to back out of that ever so marginally.
„On the exit, despite a car spinning facing him clearly having to flip out, the additional speed the Mercedes inherently has beneath it if it moves through a high-speed corner is enough to maintain him pretty much level pegging with the Ferrari.
„Unfortunately for him, onto that [pit] straight, only at the end that is what made the difference“
Leclerc said he hadn’t been happy with his own first Q3 attempt.
„Mercedes were fast, we were very fast also,“ that the Ferrari driver said.
„My lap wasn’t special. I was far too near Hulkenberg about the very first timed lap. The slipstream was clearly excellent, but at the corners I was shedding a great deal. It wasn’t ideal, I was far too close.“
Hamilton and Bottas start between the two Ferraris on Sunday’s grid and the Englishman said:“I’m really happy we enhanced the automobile piece by bit during the weekend and managed to get very close to the Ferraris that is awesome.“
