Virgil van Dijk plays down talk of new Liverpool deal
Virgil van Dijk insists he is“not discussing anything in the moment“ seeing negotiations over a contract extension at Liverpool.
The Reds defender opened up to Sky Sports News reporter Bryan Swanson after Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli.
It turned out to be a miserable start to the defence of the Champions League campaign, especially with the Van Dijk allowing a goal to be stolen by Fernando Llorente.
On the back of reports that he had agreed a new bumper deal the 28-year-old, that transferred to Anfield for # 75m in January 2018 from Southampton, was asked if he wished to hold talks to a contract extension.
„There’s nothing happening, so that is it,“ he explained.
Asked again about needing to hold discussions about’any extension‘, Van Dijk added:“That is not on me! I found some reports in the media that I was agreeing things and a new deal.
„But I am not even talking anything at the moment. The one thing that I want to do right now is to focus on the games and we’re going to find in the long run what may occur.“
Van Dijk was in the core of the ascent of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, playing a major part in the route of the club last year and their development as Manchester City’s main rivals for Premier League dominance.
By winning their first five Premier League games, liverpool have created a perfect start to their domestic effort, but they face their greatest challenge so much when they travel to confront the Chelsea on Sunday, live on Sky Sports of Frank Lampard.
