Raheem Sterling says ’society must grow up‘ and tackle racism
Raheem Sterling has called on society to“wake up“ and realise footballers are“human beings simply doing their jobs“ as players continue to be racially abused.
A variety of players, such as Tammy Abraham and Sterling’s fellow England internationals Marcus Rashford, are targeted on the internet after lost penalties this season.
Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans during a Serie A match last week, and Sterling says things must change.
He told Sky Sports News:“It’s easy to state what happens next but there’s a good deal of folks behind a computer screen. Those are those which believe they could get away with stuff like this and are unsatisfactory.
„We’re in 2019 and we are still discussing this. I can not say I’ve the answer to prevent it as a society we need to nail down on this.
„The folks doing it want to awaken and understand it is a new era and discrimination is not something anybody should face.
„We need to develop as a society and understand we’re just out here doing our tasks. We are human beings and we have feelings.
„it is a touchy subject but I can not tell you I have the specific answer. But as a society we need to perform better and appreciate each other more.“
Sterling has been outspoken in calling out racism during his career, also known to become handed a stadium ban when he was one of several England players to become racially abused throughout the group’s win there last year.
Speaking before the 4-0 triumph over Bulgaria of England on Saturday, Marcus Rashford called on networking firms to do more to prevent their users abusing others online.
„For me, it’s too simple to do whatever you like on the world wide web,“ Rashford said. „Any people today could go on and make balances and write what we want under anyone’s posts and nobody would ever know.
„The solution is not difficult to work out if you’d like to show identification to make an account which means everyone can only have one account.
„For me personally, there’s hundreds of thousands of people who use my name on social media and they can write what they enjoy.
„But people are speaking out and folks are listening hopefully we could put it right.“
