Joe Root determined to captain England in next Ashes series
Joe Root is decided to captain England in the next Ashes series in Australia and also“be in front“ of the bid to regain the urn.
Root has skippered England in two Ashes attempts – the 4-0 thrashing down under in 2017-18 and then the 2-2 draw this summer, which has been sealed using a win at The Oval on Sunday.
„Absolutely. I am very much driven towards that,“ said Root when asked by Sky Sports‘ Michael Atherton whether he wanted to lead England to the 2021-22 Ashes.
„We have two-and-a-half years to prepare well for it. I think that it has to be a real focus on English cricket to do everything we could to maintain the very best space for that.
„I need to be in the very front of this, I need to be leading it and hopefully be the guy to draw the Ashes back to England.
„It has been a wonderful summer of cricket. The World Cup win was phenomenal and men have contributed everything from this Ashes series.
„Collectively we’ve shown a lot of character throughout the whole series. We haven’t played our complete best but we have fought really hard.“
The Oval Test marked the end of Trevor Bayliss‘ four-year reign as Root and head coach was swift to commend the Australian’s effect on the group and in Ben Stokes.
Stokes‘ leading summer included starring in the third Ashes Test at Headingley at the World Cup and also also a 135 as England pulled off a triumph.
„Trev is superb,“ Root said of outgoing coach Bayliss, who assisted take England to # 1 at the ICC ODI rankings and to their maiden global 50-over title.
„He has added a huge amount for this Test team. He has been involved in some series wins house and away and what he’s done to get white-ball cricket is phenomenal.
„He is much valued in the dressing room, has a fantastic sense of humour. We played for him this week and are extremely pleased to send off him in a wonderful fashion.
„He’s allowed guys like Ben to perform their way, not to be afraid to say themselves. Consider Ben’s advancement over that interval. He’s currently one of the world.
„Over a time period you receive very powerful relationships with players and coaches and those two (Bayliss and Stokes) have gelled quite well.
„There is a good element of banter, they enjoy taking the mickey out of one another, and a massive amount of respect between them as well. That counts for a huge amount.“
About England’s Oval win, where they dismissed Australia for 263 on day after Matthew Wade had stored them up with a century,“ Root included:“I thought we had been outstanding, from the very start.
„To play as we did using lost the toss was fantastic. I thought the game was driven by us. The effort [on a wicket that is good on the last day ], though it did spin. We stuck at it.“
