Per Rapoport, contract discussions between the Chiefs and the star defensive speech have stalled, leading to the holdout.
Jones skipped each of the voluntary portions of offseason workouts hoping for a deal. Without one, he’ll bypass the portion that is mandatory . As with players under contract, Jones is subject to fines of $88,650 for mandatory minicamp, per the CBA. Fines are in the discretion of the team.
A 2016 second-round select, Jones is set to make just $1.2 million in base wages. As one of the best interior linemen in the NFL, he is woefully underpaid. The 24-year-old is coming from a 15.5-sack season as a game-wrecker on the inside. He has generated 24 sacks in his first three seasons.
Together with the Chiefs moving under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulolo to a 4-3 front, Jones may be an penetrating force in 2019. First, K.C. must repay his contract position.
