Joe Root determined to captain England in next Ashes series
Joe Root is determined to captain England in the upcoming Ashes series in Australia and also“be at front“ of the bid to regain the urn.
Root has skippered England in two Ashes campaigns – that the 4-0 thrashing down in 2017-18 and the 2-2 draw this summer, which was sealed with a triumph at The Oval on Sunday.
„Absolutely. I’m very much pushed towards this,“ said Root when requested by Sky Sports‘ Michael Atherton whether he wanted to lead England into the 2021-22 Ashes.
„We’ve two-and-a-half decades to prepare really well for this. I think that it needs to be a true focus on cricket to do everything we could to maintain the greatest possible area for that.
„I want to be at the very front of that, I wish to be leading it and hopefully be the man to draw the Ashes back to England.
„It has been a fantastic summer . The World Cup triumph was phenomenal and guys have contributed everything from this Ashes series.
„Together we have demonstrated a great deal of personality throughout the entire series. We haven’t always played our absolute best but we have fought quite hard.“
The Oval Test indicated the conclusion of Trevor Bayliss‘ Faculties reign as Root and head trainer was quick to commend the Australian’s impact and in Ben Stokes.
Stokes‘ stellar summer included starring in the third Ashes Test at Headingley at the World Cup final and also a remarkable 135 as England pulled off a triumph.
„Trev is fantastic,“ Root said of former trainer Bayliss, who helped take England to # 1 at the ICC ODI rankings as well as their ancestral international 50-over title.
„He has added a enormous amount for this Test team. He’s been engaged in some amazing series wins home and away and what he has done for cricket is phenomenal.
„He’s much appreciated in the dressing area, has a terrific sense of humor. We are happy to send him off in a fashion that was wonderful and played for him that week.
„He’s allowed guys like Ben to perform their way, not to be afraid to express themselves. Look at the advancement during that interval of Ben. He is currently one of the world.
„Over a time period that you receive very powerful relationships with coaches and players and those two (Bayliss and Stokes) have gelled quite well.
„There is a fantastic part of banter, they enjoy taking the mickey from one another, and a enormous amount of admiration between them too. That stands to get a massive volume.“
On England’s Oval win, where they dismissed Australia for 263 on day after Matthew Wade had stored them up with a century, Root added:“I thought we had been excellent, by the very start.
„To play as we did lost the toss was amazing. I believed we drove the entire game. The effort [on a wicket that is fantastic on the last day ], though it did spin. We stuck in it.“
